Democrats cheered after Biden’s State of the Union address last week because they believe he has demonstrated that he is mentally competent. They really thought his angry, shouting style speech was a winner.
Voters? Not so much.
A new poll finds that Biden got no boost in his numbers after the speech.
Yahoo News reports:
Yahoo News/YouGov Poll: No State of the Union for Biden
Pundits may have fawned over President Biden’s State of the Union address last Thursday, praising it as a “home run” from a “fiery, powerful, vigorous guy” that would ease nagging fears about his age and vitality.
But voters barely seem to notice.
A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll of 1,482 U.S. adults, conducted in the days immediately following Biden’s big speech, shows no improvement in perceptions of the president — or his standing against former President Donald Trump.
Before the State of the Union, Trump (45%) and Biden (44%) were statistically tied head-to-head in 2024, according to the previous Yahoo News/YouGov poll from late January.
Today they remain tied, with Trump at 46% and Biden at 44% – a gap that is well within the poll’s margin of error (2.8%).
Before the speech, 40% of Americans approved of the job Biden was doing as president; 56% disapproved. Today these numbers are 39% and 55% respectively.
Democrats clearly started celebrating a little too early.
A third post-SOTU national poll, YouGov/Yahoo, is Trump+2.

Two surveys were released after the SOTU. There is no Biden bump. She actually lost 2 points in a poll. https://t.co/xC85QCaAvQ pic.twitter.com/YEu4DW4z1w

Trump gains 2 points from the State of the Union
It’s a survey, it’s true. But still, having a president who consistently does NOT see a SOTU bump, even temporary, is unheard of.
What’s even better is that his SOTU was basically his campaign speech. People didn’t feel it. https://t.co/1TR3pcVq4f

The media did everything they could to help Biden with this, but it didn’t work. At this point, disapproval of Biden’s work seems unchanged.
