According to Citi’s equity team, investments made in excess of depreciation can be important fundamental drivers.
“While overall growth in capital spending has been strong in recent years, it is more encouraging that a larger share of this spending is growth rather than replacement capex,” strategist Scott Chronert wrote in a note.
“At the index level, the year-over-year fundamental impact from growth capex may be overshadowed by macroeconomic factors,” Chronert said. “
“Interestingly, across nearly all (annual) cross-sections, the third-highest segment based on our growth capex measure achieves higher sales growth and maintains a higher EBITDA margin over the next three years.”
