President Biden’s leadership was on display when he promised that the Francis Scott Key Bridge will be rebuilt and he intends for the federal government to pay the costs.
The President said: “I want to say that we are with you. We will stay with you for as long as necessary. As the governor said, you’re Maryland tough, you’re Baltimore tough, and we’ll get through this together. And I promise most wouldn’t have left. “
President Biden promised to protect jobs affected by the port closure and told the people of Maryland that he expects the federal government to pay for the bridge’s reconstruction: “My secretary of transportation is there now. As I told Governor Moore, I will direct my team to move heaven and earth to reopen the harbor and rebuild the bridge as soon as humanly possible, and we will work hand in hand to support Maryland and give them whenever they ask for . We will work with our partners in Congress to ensure the state gets the support it needs. It is my intention that the federal government pay the entire cost of rebuilding that bridge. I expect Congress to support my efforts.”

Biden’s strength and leadership in these situations might make some easily forget how bad Trump and his administration were at the basics of government. Handling an accident or natural disaster falls under Presidency 101. The basics of the job require the ability of the federal government to actually be there and help states and localities in the event of an accident or disaster.
For four years, Trump has consistently failed to meet this basic standard of presidential competence.
With Biden as president, the American people can have confidence that the federal government will be there in the event of a tragedy.
This is not something that could be said while Donald Trump was in office.
The collapse of the Francis Scott Bridge is an example of why presidential leadership matters.
