Lightning struck the torch of the Statue of Liberty during a severe thunderstorm in New York on Thursday.

Photographer Dan Martland captured the moment lightning struck the Statue of Liberty and posted the photo of the moment on X.

Martland wrote: “The Statue of Liberty is struck by lightning.”

“I usually photograph the city during thunderstorms, but I couldn’t see anything with all those low clouds. This is why I approached the Statue of Liberty. I just wanted to see something.” – added Martland.

Videos shared online show the destruction left by days of torrential rain and strong winds.

A crazy clip shows a boat nearly sinking in Sheepshead Bay during Wednesday afternoon’s torrential rain storm.

Incredible photos taken during Wednesday’s storm also showed that lightning appeared to strike the Statue of Liberty’s torch.

The Statue of Liberty wasn’t the only victim of the storm.

The storm’s strong coastal winds downed dozens of trees and power lines.

A tree felled by the storm killed Catherine Tusiani, 50, wife of a Yankee leader from New York.
