Trump and Biden rival Robert Kennedy Jr. retract email describing Jan. 6 rioters as “activists” and Julian Assange a “political prisoner”

Presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. withdrew a controversial fundraising email that referred to the Jan. 6 Capitol rioters as “activists.” The email, which also described the founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange as a “political prisoner”, it was considered a mistake.

What happened: The email was sent Thursday by Kennedy’s team, suggesting that Assange and the January 6 rioters were victims of an “outrageous miscarriage of justice.” The email, initially reported by NBC News, sparked controversy and was later retracted by Kennedy campaign spokeswoman Stephanie Spear, The Hill reported.

Spear said the email’s language was a mistake and did not reflect Kennedy’s views. He clarified that it was brought in by a new marketing contractor and bypassed the normal approval process. The campaign has since terminated its contract with the seller responsible for the error.

Because matter: In January, Benzinga reported that Kennedy supported the former president Donald Trump’s right to vote during his independent campaign. Later that month, it was revealed that Trump’s team had entered into preliminary discussions with Kennedy about a potential vice president role.

Recently, Kennedy has been labeled President Joe Biden as a more significant threat to democracy than Trump. This recent email controversy adds another layer to Kennedy’s controversial campaign and his relationship with the Trump administration.
