Donald Trump made a special announcement on abortion on Monday.
In the speech, he said abortion laws should be decided by states, without mentioning a national ban supported by many conservatives.
Something some conservatives were not happy about.

In the announcement video, Trump expressed support for IVF and states deciding on abortion policies afterward Roe v. Wade be overturned.
Reuters reports: “He did not support any national ban to ban abortion beyond any number of weeks of pregnancy, defying hopes of some religious and conservative supporters that he would pursue national limits if he returned to the White House.”

Trump previously signaled support for a ban beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy, but said political considerations were key in the first presidential election since a 2022 Supreme Court ruling ended a nearly 50-week federal right years to the procedure.
“Always follow your heart. But we have to win. We have to win,” Trump said in the video.
While his statement aimed to carve out a political middle ground, it drew criticism from both left-wing Democrats who favor abortion rights and right-wing anti-abortion groups, underscoring divisions on the issue.
“This 50-year battle is over Roe v. Wade took it out of federal hands and into the hearts, minds and votes of people in every state. He was truly extraordinary. Now it’s up to the states to do the right thing,” Trump said.
Many conservatives thought Trump had done the wrong thing.
The head of the pro-life group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America said she was “deeply disappointed” by Trump’s position. “Unborn children and their mothers deserve national protection and national support against the brutality of the abortion industry,” Dannenfelser said in a statement.
Conservative pundit Matt Walsh responded on X: “There is no such thing as a ‘right to an abortion.’ Rights are given by God and God does not give anyone the right, under any circumstances, to kill children.”

Pure politics?
Trump said he held the same position as former President Ronald Reagan. In practice this means that he also personally supports exceptions for the life of the mother, rape and incest.
No doubt Trump was trying to neutralize the opposition on the basis of this controversial issue, eight months before the election. In fact, some accused him directly.
