US stock markets closed lower on Wednesday (April 10) after unexpectedly high inflation data reduced hopes of early rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.
Major indexes fell significantly early after the CPI report beat forecasts, pointing to a long battle to reach the Fed’s 2% inflation target.
The annual inflation rate in the United States rose for the second consecutive month, reaching 3.5% in March, up from 3.2% in February, according to economic data. Meanwhile, U.S. wholesale inventories posted a 0.5% monthly increase in February, marking a turnaround from the previous month’s 0.2% decline.
In the S&P 500, all 11 primary sectors closed in the red, except energy, with real estate posting the largest decline.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.09% to close at 38,461.51. The S&P 500 slipped 0.95%, ending the day at 5,160.64, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.84%, closing the session at 16,170.36.
