The U.S. Department of Defense said Thursday that it has awarded a contract worth $4.1 billion to Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) to continue the development of its battle command system.
The Department of Defense said Lockheed (LMT) will develop, test, deliver and help manage upgrades and new capabilities for the command and control, battle management and communications system, or C2BMC, for the Missile Defense Agency.
According to the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, C2BMC is responsible for integrating the individual components of the ballistic missile defense system to create a global, interconnected, layered missile defense posture capable of identifying, tracking and intercepting ballistic missile threats across all the phases of flight.
The contract ordering period runs from May 1, 2024, to April 30, 2029, with an option to extend to the end of April 2034, the Defense Department said.
