(Reuters) – Alphabet’s Waymo has recalled as many as 444 vehicles and fixed a problem with its automated driving systems (ADS) software, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Thursday.
According to the agency, its fifth-generation ADS systems with versions released before Dec. 20 may have inaccurately predicted the movement of a towed vehicle.
The company updated the software and all affected vehicles were repaired as of Jan. 12, the NHTSA said.
The notice about the fix comes days after a mob vandalized and set fire to a Waymo self-driving car using fireworks in San Francisco, marking the most destructive attack yet on driverless vehicles in the United States.
California lawmakers and unions rallied Monday to demand laws that would not allow autonomous trucks without human drivers, amid growing safety concerns after crashes involving self-driving taxis from General Motors (NYSE:) and Alphabet ( NASDAQ:).
Separately, the NHTSA said electric automaker Lucid Group (NASDAQ:) also recalled 189 of its air vehicles to fix a software problem that could have caused a loss of motive power.
Lucid released an over-the-air update in October 2023 to address the issue, the agency said.
Waymo and Lucid did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
