Joe Biden AND Donald Trump they further solidified their status as front-runners in the 2024 presidential election with dominant victories in states that voted in the Super Tuesday primaries.
A poll conducted before Super Tuesday (March 5) showed a shift at the top of the leaderboard with Biden retaking the lead for the first time in months.
What happened: For months, Biden and Trump have been the favorites for the Democratic and Republican nominations for the 2024 presidential election, respectively.
With victories on Super Tuesday and Nikki Haley abandoning the Republican race on Wednesday, a rematch of the 2020 presidential election that saw Biden defeat Trump is likely what voters will face at the polls eight months from now.
National polls of registered voters showed a tight race between the two contenders. After weeks of a growing lead for one candidate, a change at the top has been recognized by voters as the key date of Super Tuesday approaches.
The weekly Morning Consul poll asked registered voters who they would select from the two candidates.
In this week’s poll, Biden received 44% of the vote, while Trump received 43%. Meanwhile, 8% selected “Someone else” and 5% selected “I don’t know.”
That marked a two percentage point gain for Biden while someone else saw a two percentage point drop. Trump’s support remained the same as in the most recently reported poll.
Independent voterswho could decide the election, has selected his picks for 2024 as follows, with the most recent results in parentheses:
Joe Biden: 34% (32%)
Donald Trump: 37% (38%)
Somebody else: 18% (20%)
I do not know: 10% (11%)
The poll found that 87% of Republican voters chose Trump when presented with the above options, down one percentage point from the most recent poll. It also emerged that 86% of Democratic voters chose Biden, an increase of four percentage points.

Because it is important: After trailing by five points just a few weeks ago, Biden has closed the gap and regained the lead. This marks Biden’s first lead in Morning Consult’s head-to-head poll since early January 2024.
Trump has led Trump in more than half of weekly polls over the past five months, with Biden ahead only on several occasions.
The latest poll showed Trump with an improving net favorable rating of negative three points, the highest since mid-December. Biden’s net favorability remained negative, with more voters expressing an unfavorable than favorable opinion of the president.
The economy and immigration remain the two key issues for voters in the poll. Morning Consult noted that 66% of voters now say immigration is very important as a 2024 election issue, compared to 50% who responded the same way in November 2022.
A Morning Consult poll of voters in swing states recently showed Trump with a 48% to 43% lead over Biden.
Another poll of voters who disliked both candidates showed Trump at 27% to Biden’s 26%. In that poll, 36% of voters said they would vote for someone else in the 2024 presidential election.
With Biden retaking the lead and Super Tuesday results showing dominant victories by both candidates, next week’s poll could tell whether Biden can maintain the lead or whether Haley drops out and Trump secures the likely GOP nomination will report former president back in command.
