New York City Councilmember James Gennaro has introduced a bill that would ban the sale or distribution of laundry or dishwasher detergent pods and laundry sheets that contain polyvinyl alcohol, a petroleum-based plastic film that contains detergents. Those who violate the ban face a $400 fine for the first violation. The fine would increase by $400 for each additional violation. Supporters say these pods and sheets leave microplastics in the environment and city water supplies. The bill is supported by Blueland, a cleaning product maker whose products compete with pods and sheets.
