After the deadly tragedy of a Nashville school shooting in March 2023 that claimed six lives, the Tennessee House is looking to pass a bill that would allow teachers to carry a concealed handgun this week.
Staff members from both private and public schools will be allowed transport if they take part in a 40-hour training session and then get a stamp of approval from authorities.
But surprisingly, some teachers and mothers want to stop this bill. One specific teacher’s arguments against the bill are going viral because they are complete nonsense.

Tennessee’s WSMV 4 reports: “On Monday, Melissa Alexander came to the Cordell Hull Building with her son, a student at Covenant School, for a press conference about the bill. “My son is sitting right here because he was protected that day by his teacher,” she pointed out. She, along with Mary Joyce, was there to advocate not only for parents but also for educators.”
They read a statement from a Covenant School teacher to try to stop the bill.
“I simply cannot imagine how I could have pulled a gun with 10 children under my feet and in my arms,” Alexander read from the statement.
The words come from a kindergarten teacher who watched over 13 students in a small closet on the day of the shooting.
“As we heard the shots over and over again, we worked to comfort the frightened children,” Alexander read.
According to the mothers, teachers should stay with students to help them calm down in case of an emergency.
“It is only because of their teacher that the students remained silent and watched the killer’s feet pass in front of the door,” Alexander said.
Bogus argument?
“What if she hadn’t been there to help the children and hadn’t chased the killer?” she added.
Joyce was concerned that the legislation did not address the issue of whether parents and most staff would know if a teacher was armed until an emergency occurred.
“With no time to prepare, they watched as their teacher ran down the hallway while they had to lock the door, lower the blinds, retreat to the hard corner of the classroom and remain calm and quiet without any supervision,” Joyce said. .
The arguments seem to hold that armed teachers must all “run after” an armed man, which seems like a straw man. An armed teacher would stay where he is, in case a shooter entered their classroom. Exactly what happened during the Covenant shootout.
No one is asking teachers to pile in and go on a search and destroy mission. They only ask that a teacher have a firearm in case there is a shooter at the door.
What “terrible things” would have gone wrong if that teacher had held a gun while calming his students?
The horrible, honest question is, “What would have happened if the killer had entered her classroom and she had been disarmed, as has happened in other classrooms?”
Unfortunately, we have too many examples to list to know the answer to this question.
