Kenya’s data protection agency has ordered TikTok to share details on its compliance with national privacy laws and user verification.
Kithure Kindiki, Kenya’s interior minister, told members of parliament that the The data protection regulator has warned the social platform over concerns that the platform is being abused by cybercriminals and the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
TikTok is used “to spread malicious propaganda, steal popular accounts through identity theft and impersonation,” he told lawmakers, including recruiting for fake jobs and exchange programs.
The hugely popular social media platform is under fire in various countries, including the UK and the United States, due to privacy concerns and its ownership in China. This month, the US House of Representatives voted in favor ban the appbut the bill still has to pass the U.S. Senate, which has not accepted it.
