HELSINKI (Reuters) – A strong odor resembling sulfur or burning rubber has been detected in the region around the Finnish capital Helsinki, the city’s rescue department said on Sunday.
The odor was reported in an area stretching at least 60 km along Finland’s southern coast, the department said.
“The Rescue Department and other authorities are looking into the matter,” a post on X reads.
There was no immediate indication that the odor was a health hazard, he added.
Russian media outlet Fontanka reported on Sunday that residents in several areas of St. Petersburg, the Russian city closest to Finland, had complained of an unpleasant odor, comparing it to that of gas, garbage or burning rubber.
According to local authorities cited by Fontanka, monitoring stations have not recorded anything exceeding permitted levels of air pollution.
