Healthcare organizations remain firmly in the crosshairs of attackers, accounting for 20% of all victims of ransomware attacks among critical infrastructure entities in the United States in 2023

According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) 2023 Internet Crime Report, more than 20% of ransomware attacks that hit critical infrastructure organizations in the United States in 2023 were aimed at the healthcare sector. Specifically, the IC3 received 1,193 reports of attacks against organizations operating in one of the nation’s 16 critical infrastructure sectors, including 249 against healthcare.

This very topic has come to the fore in recent days with reports that medical company Change Healthcare – which suffered a disruptive ransomware attack in late February that devastated prescriptions nationwide – would pay a whopping $22 million to the attackers.
