Many conservatives have wanted to end government funding of National Public Radio for many years.
Recently resurfaced tweets from NPR CEO Katherine Maher, combined with the suspension of an NPR editor after he called out the paper’s left-wing bias, have renewed the idea that perhaps taxpayers should no longer fund it.

It’s never been a secret that NPR has liberal biases
NPR chief Maher has a history of speaking out support for racial reparations and climate change ideology – fitting for his new position.
Conservative activist Christopher Rufo found these old tweets, something that was mentioned in the New York Times.
Maher’s past posts on social media are noteworthy. Veteran NPR journalist Uri Berliner wrote an op-ed for The Free Press in which he accused his longtime newspaper of having a “liberal slant” and a lack of diversity in viewpoints.
The Berliner, who worked at NPR for 25 years, was suspended for five days not long after.
He explored how NPR had stories about Hunter Biden’s controversial laptop in 2020 reported as “Russian disinformation” and the Wuhan lab origin theory of Covid-19 treated as a conspiracy theory as examples where no one is held accountable.
The Berliner talks about prejudice
“It’s one thing to miss an important story,” Berliner writes. “Unfortunately it happens. You follow the wrong leads, you get misled by sources you trusted, you get emotionally invested in a narrative, and the circumstantial evidence never adds up. It’s bad to ruin a great story.
“What’s worse is pretending it never happened, moving on without mea culpa, without self-reflection,” he continued. “Especially when you expect high standards of transparency from public figures and institutions, but don’t practice them yourself. This is what destroys trust and breeds cynicism towards the media.”
Berliner said that NPR is held hostage by all the typical leftist stereotypes.
“Race and identity have become central to nearly every aspect of the workplace,” he wrote. “Journalists had to ask everyone we interviewed their race, gender and ethnicity (among other questions) and had to enter them into a centralized tracking system. We were given training sessions on unconscious bias. A growing DEI staff offered regular meetings imploring us to “start talking about race.” Monthly dialogues were offered for “women of color” and “men of color.” Non-binary people of color were also included.

Defund NPR now
Maher responded to Berliner’s criticism in a statement, saying: “In America everyone has the right to free speech as a private citizen. What matters is NPR’s work and my commitment as CEO: public service, editorial independence, and a mission to serve all of the American public. NPR is independent, not tied to any party and has no commercial interests.”
Yeah, for sure.
It’s true, everyone has the right to free speech.
But NPR is not entitled to American taxpayer money to fund only the narrow ideas it supports.
NPR should have been defunded a long time ago. But there is still no better time than the present.
