US stock markets, including the NASDAQ AND New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), are closed on Monday, February 19, in commemoration of George Washington’s birthdaywidely recognized as Presidents’ Day.
Markets will resume operations on Tuesday 20 February, after the holiday break.
Additionally, the U.S. bond market will also pause on Presidents’ Day, abiding by the schedule outlined by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Presidents’ Day, celebrated annually, is part of the Uniform Holiday Bill signed into law in 1968 by the President Lyndon B. Johnsondesigned to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers by ensuring that some federal holidays, including Presidents’ Day, fall on a Monday.
This year’s observance marks the third close of the 2024 holiday schedule for stock markets, following New Year’s Eve and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The next market close will be on Friday 29 March, in observance of Good Friday.
The stock market will also close on the following days this year: Memorial Day on May 27, Juneteenth on June 19, Independence Day on July 4, Labor Day on September 2, Thanksgiving on November 28, and Christmas on December 25.
