Mark Wahlberg, long known as one of Hollywood’s few openly Christian stars, celebrated Ash Wednesday yesterday by revealing the power of prayer.
Wahlberg promotes prayer on Ash Wednesday
Days after starring together in a Super Bowl commercial for the Catholic prayer app Hallow, Wahlberg and actor Jonathan Roumie went on “Fox & Friends” to talk about why they believe it’s essential to start your day with prayer.
“People always ask, what are you giving up? Wahlberg began. “I’ve given up a lot of things for Lent, whether it’s… alcohol or something… sweet, but for me it’s really about trying to do more… trying to be better, trying to grow as a person, as a servant. God, a father, a husband… as an example… and using all the real life experience I have.”
Wahlberg went on to say that he “absolutely” starts every morning by falling to his knees in prayer.
“People always ask ‘why can’t you have a normal schedule?’ My point is, if I’m at home, I do all the things I need to do during my free time, before the kids and my wife get up,” she explained. “I always sleep eight hours. It’s not that I’m burning the candle at both ends, per se. I’m getting the rest I need.
“In a perfect world, I’ll go to bed at 7-7:30, wake up at 3-3:30 and then do my thing, get it out of the way before I start the day with family or work,” he added . “I have a lot to be grateful for.”
“I think it gives me some credibility towards people who have struggled and who have faced adversity,” Wahlberg continued. “We just want to be able to do more and, I think, what’s better than having Ash Wednesday fall on Valentine’s Day? Because where do you find more love than with the Lord and… at a time when there is such a disconnect? We need things that bring people together and the power of prayer is doing that.”

Roumie agrees
Roumie, who played Jesus Christ in “The Chosen,” couldn’t help but wholeheartedly agree with Wahlberg.
“I think it fixes everything. Prepare your mind… Prepare your spirit for… the challenges, maybe the day and also the successes,” Roumie said. “And I think, as Mark says… starting the day with gratitude and knowing that…we have been given so much in this life to be grateful to God for.”

This came just days after Wahlberg and Roumie starred in a Super Bowl ad for the Hallow app, which later saw a huge increase in downloads.

Wahlberg’s strong Christian faith
Wahlberg has long been open about his strong Christian faith.
“It’s a balance. I don’t want to shove this down anyone’s throat, but I don’t deny my faith. This is an even greater shame,” Wahlberg said last year.
“You know, it’s not popular in my industry, but I can’t deny my faith. It’s important for me to share that with people,” she continued. “But I have friends from all walks of life and all different types of faiths and religions, so it’s important to respect and honor them too.”
