Michael Cohen’s lawyer says Trump will be jailed if convicted

Michael Cohen’s attorney, Lanny Davis, said there is no doubt Trump will be jailed if convicted in Manhattan.

Could Trump be jailed if criminally convicted in Manhattan?

Davis said when MSNBC’s Jen Psaki asked about prison time for Trump if he were convicted, he will definitely go to prison for it because he can’t pardon himself. Let me repeat that. He will do it if he is elected president, I hope that doesn’t happen. He says he will forgive himself, and he probably will try, but he cannot be pardoned from a criminal conviction by a jury for a state crime. He has to go to prison. I would not be in favor of putting him behind bars. I would prefer house arrest, something less than behind bars because he is a former president. But there is no doubt that he will be incarcerated under house arrest or behind bars. If he gets convicted.”

For years people have said Trump should go to prison or behind bars. Starting tomorrow, Trump’s incarceration could become a reality.

Lanny Davis was probably right. Given Trump’s circumstances – a former president in his late 80s with no criminal record – it is likely that if he is found guilty, he will be sentenced to some form of house arrest.

It would be very interesting how Trump’s possible incarceration could impact the 2024 presidential campaign. If Trump was under house arrest, would he campaign via Zoom calls? Having Trump unable to physically campaign would be crushing for the Republican Party.

Republicans would get what they asked for when they nominated a candidate facing 91 felonies as their presidential nominee.

The Manhattan trial will be the closest Donald Trump has ever come to conviction and incarceration.
