For a long time many on the left, including the New York Times, talk of a “Deep State” was mere right-wing conspiracy theory nonsense. The idea that there was an entrenched class of unelected bureaucrats manipulating society behind the scenes was just nonsense, they insisted.
Now, apparently, the Deep State is awesome.
So declared a recent Times opinion video that sought to humanize the Deep State by profiling some who work within it.

The New York Times begins by trying to make Trump seem paranoid about the Deep State
The piece is part article and video. The creators focused on former President Trump’s criticism of the “Deep State,” which is typically used to describe unelected bureaucrats negatively, a group he and his supporters believe work to damage his agenda.
The authors traveled to meet with various federal government employees across the country to show how normal they are, implying that Trump is paranoid and crazy.
The article reveals: “When we met the Americans who are dismissed as public enemies, we discovered that they are… us. They like Taylor Swift. They dance bachata.”
He goes on to explain, “They go to bed at night watching reruns of ‘Star Trek.’ They go to work and do their job: save us from Armageddon.”
Fox News reported: “The corresponding video showed brief interviews with people working at the Environmental Protection Agency, Marshall Space Flight Center and other US government agencies.”
“The piece went on to tell readers that they should support this ‘Deep State,'” Fox notes.
The story continued:
“When we hear about the ‘deep state,’ instead of retreating, we should rally. We should think of the workers otherwise known as our public servants, the everyday superheroes who wake up ready to dedicate their careers and lives to our service.”
“These are the Americans we employ. Even though their work is often invisible, it makes our lives better,” the article states, before warning that Trump intends to get rid of many of these individuals if he returns to the White House.
“But if Donald Trump were reelected and adopted Schedule F, that could change,” he said, referring to classification status that would make it easier for public employees to be terminated from political appointment. “He would have the power to gut the so-called deep state and replace our public employees with people who work for him, not us.”
The article concluded by saying, “In the video above, you’ll meet some of our hard-working American public servants, and we hope you’ll agree that they’re not scary at all. In fact, they’re really cool.

“Perfect headline for the New York Times”
Journalist and civil libertarian Glenn Greenwald had seen enough.
“Perfect headline for the New York Times,” he wrote. “Perfect expression of the predominant liberal ideology in the United States.”
He added: “Perfect illustration of the subservient relationship between the corporate media and the US government. Yes, it is designed to be “playful”: to humanize the most powerful agencies. 10/10.”
Elon Musk called the Times “the mouthpiece of the state”.
Conservative personalities piled in.
