In a recent development, Republican presidential candidate, Nikki Haleyexpressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision to retain the former president Donald Trump on the Colorado ballot.
What happened: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected 14th Amendment challenges to Trump’s eligibility for the White House, a decision Haley praised on CNN’s “The Lead” with Jake Tapper. Haley stressed that the decision about who will lead the country should be left to the American people, The Hill reported.
“We don’t want chaos where some states or secretaries of state say they like someone or don’t like someone and want to keep them off the ballot. I trust the American people,” Haley said, according to the report.
The court ruled that Colorado cannot exclude Trump from the ballot under the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause. The majority opinion stated that the power to enforce the amendment to disqualify federal candidates rests with Congress.
Despite trailing significantly behind Trump in the Republican presidential primaries, Haley remains dedicated to the race. She expressed her intention to defeat Trump without the courts removing him from the ballot, stating: “I’m trying to defeat Donald Trump in an honest and transparent way.”
Questioned about the meaning of the 14th Amendment in light of the ruling, Haley turned to legal experts, saying the Supreme Court’s role was to decide the voting issue, not to determine whether an insurrection had occurred.
