Hyundai Motor Europe and a California union separately revealed this week that they suffered cyberattacks last month and lost data to their respective threat actors.
Black Enough, a group that first appeared in 2022 as a double extortion operator, claimed to have stolen 3 TB of data from Hyundai Motor Europe. The automaker has not confirmed it suffered a ransomware attack, nor Black Basta’s boasts.
“Hyundai Motor Europe is investigating a case in which an unauthorized third party gained access to a limited part of Hyundai Motor Europe’s network,” Hyundai said. “Our investigation is ongoing and we are working closely with external legal and cybersecurity experts.”
Meanwhile, another group affiliated with the ransomware activity, LockBitclaimed responsibility for a cyberattack on Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1000 in California.
According to ransomware gang, stole 308GB of data from the union, including employee information such as Social Security numbers, salary information, and financial documents.
The Union released a statement on Facebook confirming that it suffered a network outage on January 18th. His statement seemed to suggest that the attack was related to ransomware.
“As we investigated the incident, we learned that it was caused by the encryption of some data. We are aware of the ongoing discussion on social media about the type of attack we allegedly suffered and the actor by whom it was apparently carried out,” he said the union. “We are currently working with external experts to ensure the ongoing security of the network and to assist and advise as we continue to restore our operations. This incident was a criminal cyber act and is being treated as such as we assist law enforcement.”
