A Boeing (NYSE: BA) 737-800 operated by Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) returned to Denver International Airport after the crew reported that a cowling, or removable cover, fell off an engine during takeoff and struck a wing flap, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday United.
The carrier said Southwest Flight 3695 to Houston took off at 7:39 a.m. local time and landed safely at 8:14 a.m. after the problem was reported.
The plane, carrying 135 passengers and six crew members, was towed to the gate. The FAA said it has launched an investigation into the crash.
The agency’s report did not indicate the type of engine on the plane. The 737-800 is typically powered by two wing-mounted CFM56 engines made by CFM International. Seeking Alpha is looking for more information about the manufacturer.
