Stephen Colbert chastised the media for mostly ignoring the fact that House Republicans are basing Biden’s impeachment on Russian disinformation.
Colbert said:
Russian influence in the Republican Party goes no further than the fake impeachment of Joe Biden, which they hope to achieve by attacking Hunter Biden first. Hunter was on Capitol Hill today to testify before the impeachment committee. We don’t know what he said, but we know the GOP case is imploding, thanks to their star witness, Alexander Smirnov, seen here, not seen here. In 2020, Smirnov told his FBI agent that he could testify that the owner of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma had arranged to pay $5 million in bribes to both President Biden and his son Hunter. This is what you would call a smoking gun, okay, if it was smoking or a gun.
Now, then, the FBI warned the Republicans that this information would prevent them from staking the entire case on this clown sky. And it turns out he may have been an oopsie-daisy because now Smirnov has been accused of lying to the FBI and creating false documents and has admitted to receiving information about Hunter Biden from Russian intelligence. Republicans in Congress attempting to impeach the President of the United States based on false information relayed directly to Capitol Hill from the Kremlin would, at any other time in human history, be a scandal of such magnitude and severity that it would send the Earth into a tailspin . its orbit around the sun. But we don’t hear much about it because in the United States half of the media is focused on the “The old man is old and he likes ice cream” scandal. I like ice cream too.

Even late-night comedians see the absurdity in the distorted nature of the media’s political coverage. The backlash among the press deciding that serious stories like Russia donating and Republicans laundering and accepting disinformation are given a lower priority than Joe Biden’s age, or him eating ice cream by much of the press American politics is a real problem.
Not all media outlets engage in this behavior, but some of the larger ones, like the New York Times, are consistent violators.
Those who do not believe that protecting democracy is an important issue are doing the work of autocratic forces under the guise of journalism.
