Temu’s cash giveaway in which people were asked to hand over large amounts of personal data to the platform shines a spotlight on the data slurping practices of today’s online services

Temu, the popular China-based online marketplace, recently ran a promotion in which people received money in exchange for new signups that involved handing over large amounts of personal data, including their “voice” and “biographical information.” Many people accepted Temu’s offer and continued to post “invite codes” on social media sites in an attempt to multiply rewards for themselves and their relatives and friends.

The company later revised the terms of the giveaway, but the issue put a spotlight on the data collection practices of popular online services these days. Some of the questions this brings, however, are:

  • Did new Temu users read the fine print?
  • Do they and their friends know what they agreed to?
  • What should you consider before accepting these types of offers?
