Jon Stewart defeated Trump after the first day of the secret trial with a joke highlighting the former president’s attacks on America.
Stewart said of Trump falling asleep during the trial: “Imagine committing so many crimes that you’re bored at your own trial. On to the good stuff! Now, in case you’ve lost track, this is the trial in which Trump allegedly paid hush money to an adult film star he was sleeping with and then falsified corporate records to hide the fact. Or as Trump would say:”
Clip of Trump saying: “This is political persecution. This is persecution like never before. No one has ever seen anything like it. And once again, it’s a case that should never have been brought forward. It’s an assault on America, and that’s why I’m very proud to be here.”
Stewart responded with a brutally true observation: “Well, it’s true, Trump is always very proud to take part in any attack on America.”

Jon Stewart was right. If there’s one thing Donald Trump loves as much as money and crime, it’s attacking America. Trump attacks America by undermining its alliances and its influence in the world. He also attacks America by practicing hateful, divisive policies. He literally killed Americans by intentionally mishandling a pandemic. There was also the literal attack of violence against America on January 6, and the former president’s continuing effort to destroy democracy.
Trump’s reckoning seems to have arrived, and comedians like Jon Stewart are reminding the country why it must fall.
