Leadership: a dynamic and difficult to tame beast that we all have to deal with. We agree? How would you feel if I said that there is some form of Greek secret from ancient times that is right behind our noses and maybe around the corner? This could change the way we manage, solve problems and work in teams. This is the Socratic method of leadership.
It’s not just another buzzword I talk about at networking events. It’s simply the easy way out and I’m here to shed light on authentic business tactics.
Imagine this: the discussion, responses, and insights that come from critical thinking not only stimulate the mind, but also provide the fertile soil on which ideas grow like flowers in spring. This approach is as old as Socrates, a man who could be considered the originator of the concept of “thinking outside the box.”
However, the question is: can ancient approaches be applied to the modern workplace? Hold on to your seats! In just a few seconds you will know how to use the Socratic method as a lightsaber of wisdom that will be used to solve problems and enhance the capabilities of your team.

1. Start by asking tough questions
The foundation on which the Socratic method is built is questioning: not common questions, but those that do not follow your thought patterns and, therefore, improve your understanding of the world. Your meetings may involve questions like “What are we taking for granted?” or “How can we see this problem from another perspective?”. These questions are not simple, but they stimulate the brain.
2. Encourage a curious culture
As a team leader, you must motivate them to challenge all objectivity throughout the process. Clearly, this rule must not become a scene from “The Inquisition”, in which people appoint themselves judges. It’s about creating a culture where questions should be seen as a tool for improvement rather than a challenge to power. When your team understands that “why” and “how” questions are the key to success, they will discover the hidden bundle of new ideas.
3. Encourage dialogue
The fact that the Socratic method is based on dialogue – a conversation that is deeper than simple socializing but includes conversations in which information is exchanged and new ideas emerge – makes it even more intriguing. In this way long speeches become rare and the relaxation room becomes a place full of life, where dialogue is as free as coffee. Encourage team members to think aloud, give an appropriate hearing, and touch on each other’s points.
4. Embrace the discomfort
Let’s be honest: confronting established opinions is equivalent to facing the challenge of walking barefoot on hot sand. While this might be disturbing, this is when growth happens. Support your team in the process of accepting that they don’t know every answer. In such stressful situations, students are sharpening their analytical skills and quick reasoning skills appear on the scene.
5. The art of active listening
Socrates’ secret is a form of creative listening. Communication is much more than simply hearing what is said; rather, it is about also understanding the additional meaning implied. You can actively listen by paraphrasing the main points mentioned, asking for clarity and letting the other person know that you are actually interested in their opinions. This offers a platform for trust and new perspectives are thus initiated.

6. Ask the question
The solution to a problem can also be found in the same questions that describe it. Ask your team if they are asking the right questions. Meta-thinking at this level can easily reveal assumptions that could lead to revolutionary thinking.
7. Encourage empathy
The Socratic Method is not just an intellectual but a human exercise. Empathy in discussions will make your team more understanding than other approaches and, as a result, create a more social and innovative work environment. When team members understand each other better, solutions become broader and more effective.
8. Shout out “a-ha” moments.
Make sure you mark when the team makes progress by doing something great. These victories are proof that Socratic discussion is the tool you need to further develop your team.
9. Iterate and reflect
The Socratic method is not plug-and-play; instead it is a process of continuous improvement. Each dialogue should end with a pause to think about what you have learned and how you can apply it. This way, you will be able to keep your leadership approach alive and your teamwork successful.
10. Lead by example
You, as the leader, are the first to apply the Socratic method and the rest of the team will follow your example. Practice what you preach by critiquing yourself, identifying with others intuitively, and building space for exploration and critical thinking. When your employees see you as a role model who leads by example, they are more likely to do the same.

The Socratic method for leadership should not be viewed simply as a high and powerful concept, but as a practical set of tools that bring innovations to life, aid in problem solving, and improve communication with the team even on a deeper level. With this strategy you become a mentor and creator of change, transforming the workplace into the cradle of creativity and critical thinking.
So, next time you face a leadership challenge, remember: a question can be an effective tool. Pay attention and appreciate the team’s achievements because your team will reach new heights of creativity and engagement. In this regard, as Socrates once said, “I cannot teach anyone anything; all I can do is make them think.”
