Former president Donald Trump hinted at possible changes in the leadership of the Republican National Committeefollowing criticism of its president and the party’s financial difficulties.
What happened: Trump, in an interview on Sunday, suggested that the RNC could see some changes in leadership, according to ABC News. The former president was questioned Ronna McDanielthe RNC chairwoman, who has been targeted by Trump allies, including Turning Point, a group that sought to oust her in 2023.
“I think she was great when she ran Michigan for me. I think she initially did well in the RNC. I would say at this time there will probably be some changes made,” Trump said.
These comments follow campaign revelations showing the RNC with only $8 million in funding and $1 million in debt. Trump suggested that people are dissatisfied with the RNC and are looking for changes. He also separated himself from the RNC, saying, “You have to understand, I have nothing to do with the RNC. I’m separate.”
Trump and his allies have urged the party to unite behind him and actually end the primaries, despite resistance from his former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley. McDaniel faced backlash last month for saying Haley had no chance of getting the nomination after Trump’s victory in the New Hampshire primary.

Because matter: According to a November 2023 Benzinga report, Trump’s dissatisfaction with McDaniel and the RNC leadership has grown over time. Following a series of GOP defeats in key races in Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, Trump allies reportedly blamed McDaniel’s leadership for the party’s struggles and encouraged Trump to pressure McDaniel to resign.
Additionally, a Benzinga report this month revealed that in a hypothetical general election matchup, Pres Joe Biden led Trump by a 50% to 44% margin among registered voters, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.
