Donald Trump became the first former president in history to be tried on criminal charges, and his granddaughter, Mary Trump, A clinical psychologist took stock of the events of the first day of the secret trial on Monday.
The test begins with setbacks: Acting Justice of the New York Supreme Court Juan Mercan rejected Donald Trump’s request to recuse himself, with the judge saying the defense team’s request was based on “a series of inferences, innuendos and unsupported speculations,” Mary Trump said.
Unlike the judge Aileen Cannone of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, which is overseeing Donald Trump’s federal criminal prosecution related to the mishandling of classified documents, Judge Merchan has demonstrated a commitment to the rule of law, he said. Judge Cannon was nominated and confirmed by the former president and drew criticism for intentionally delaying the case, reports say.
The former president’s granddaughter also noted that her narrative that President Joe Biden is sleepy is undermined, because he himself was caught napping at one point during Monday’s trial.
To make matters worse, Judge Merchan warned that Donald Trump would be sent to prison if he stopped the court proceedings, Mary Trump said. “This is a great sign that Merchan will treat Donald like any other criminal defendant and will not give him any special treatment,” she added.
Prosecutors accused the former president of violating the gag order and asked the judge to impose sanctions and a monetary fine for each Truth Social post that violated the gag order, the psychologist said. They also argued that if he continues to violate the gag order, he should be sent to prison, he said, adding that Merchan has granted the request and that the hearing will be held on April 23.
Mary Trump noted that the first day of the trial ended without selecting a single juror.

Other rejections: Donald Trump’s media company shares Trump Media & Technology Group Corp DJT Stocks fell Monday as he was fighting in the House, Mary Trump said. According to Benzinga Pro data, the stock fell 18.35% to $26.61 at the close. The day ended just off the session lows. Wider market negativity and calls for a secondary sale of shares dragged the stock sharply lower.
Since it began operating as a public company following the merger with SPAC Digital World Acquisition Corp. on March 26 it lost about 54%,
Mary Trump also noted that Biden increased his lead from a mere point in March to four points in April, according to a new Reuters/IPSOS poll. “This notable shift in public opinion is significant, especially considering Donald was five points ahead of Biden in a poll conducted in January,” Mary Trump said.
The presidential candidate’s conduct in the courtroom and the outcome of the trial could influence public opinion, he said.
“Donald is finally facing his criminal charges,” she said, adding that his “mandatory presence every day will give the jury a front-row seat to his bad behavior.”
