Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon signed a bill Friday banning doctors from performing “gender transition” and sex change procedures on minors.
According to Senate File 99, any healthcare provider who administers puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or sex reassignment surgery to a minor will be subject to license suspension or revocation.
As he signed the bill, the governor didn’t seem keen on doing so.
“I signed SF99 because I support the protections this bill provides for children, however I believe the government is intruding into the personal affairs of families,” Gov. Gordon said in a statement about the legislation.
Gordon continued: “Our Legislature needs to make its intentions clear regarding parental rights. While in some places it inserts governmental prerogatives, in others it affirms parental rights.”
Of course, the American Civil Liberties Union of Wyoming opposes the ban.
“By signing this bill, Governor Gordon has charged the government with making vital decisions traditionally reserved for Wyoming parents,” ACLU of Wyoming Executive Director Libby Skarin said in the announcement. “This ban will not stop Wyomingites from being trans, but it will deny them the critical supports that help struggling transgender youth grow into thriving transgender adults.”
The law will come into force on July 1.
